DAVIS, Calif. - Kyle Crain converted on a penalty kick and the Chico State defense limited host UC Davis to only nine shots, including two on goal, in a 1-1 tie at Aggie Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon. Despite its exhibition status, much was on the line in the match. UC Davis Head Coach Dwayne Schaffer is a Chico State alum, while Chico State Head Coach Felipe Restrepo is a UC Davis alum. The programs were also long-time rivals before the Aggies made the jump to Division I and the Big West.
The match was scoreless into the 30th minute before Chico State broke out on top. Crain's penalty kick made it 1-0 with just under 16 minutes left in the first half.
It would stay that way well into the second half before an own goal tied the game with under four minutes left in regulation. The sequence started on a throw-in from the left side by Paul Marcoux. His throw sailed off the finger tips of Wildcats goalkeeper Michael Keohane to give the Aggies their first goal of the day. The teams battled through a pair of 10-minute overtime periods without a goal.
Chico State outshot UC Davis, 11-9 while also enjoying an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.
The Wildcats finished the exhibition 1-0-1 (They beat Holy Names 2-0 Thursday night.) and Crain had a goal and an assist in the two friendlies. They open the regular season with the Chico State Wildcat Invitational, which begins Thursday when they host Academy of Art at 7 PM. They'll face Saint Martin's at 7 PM Saturday after CSU Monterey Bay and Academy of Art tangle at 4:30. The Invitational wraps up Monday when CSU Monterey Bay and Saint Martin's Clash at 11 AM. All four matches will take place at University Soccer Stadium.
UC Davis is coming off consecutive trips to the NCAA Division I Championship Tournament.
