Wildcats get last-second stop for important road victory

TURLOCK, Calif. – One stop for a win. It’s a drill that the Chico State men’s basketball team runs almost daily. Wednesday night they got to turn that practice into perfection. The Wildcats forced a contested 3-pointer in the final seconds and eventually tracked down a loose-ball rebound at the buzzer to hold on for a 52-51 victory at Cal State Stanislaus Wednesday night. Andy Bocian scored what proved to be the game-winning basket inside with 1:54 remaining. He finished with a game-high 22 points and also nabbed six rebounds. The 3-pointers Justin Argenal and Roderick Hawkins made late in the game were just as critical.

Argenal’s 3-pointer with just over seven minutes left gave the Wildcats the lead back at 45-43 after the Warriors had threatened to take control of the game with a 10-2 run. Hawkins’ trey – just he second in the season on seven tries – also stemmed the tide. Cal State Stanislaus was in the midst of a 6-2 run that had put them in the lead in the final minutes when Hawkins took a pass from Nick Lonnegren on the left wing and buried the long jump shot to give the Wildcats back the lead, 50-49, with 2:47 to play.

Argenal finished with nine points, Hawkins seven, and Lonnegren chipped in five points as six rebounds as the Wildcats improved to 6-10 overall and 3-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Matt Ibewiro led Cal State Stanislaus (5-9, 1-8 CCAA) with 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Chris Hayes added 11 points. The Wildcats held Warriors leading scorer Benny Koochoie to just four points on 1-of-7 shooting.
