SEASIDE, Calif. – Abby Stretch assisted on Melissa Lindsay's header in the 11th minute and then scored on a header of her own int eh 75th minute to lead the Chico State women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday. It was the first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win of 2008 for the Wildcats, who snapped a four-match winless streak.
The Wildcats, who had two ties and two losses over their last four matches entering Sunday's action, improved to 5-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 with the win. Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 1-9-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the CCAA.
Chico State will have an opportunity to keep rolling when it hosts Cal State Stanislaus Wednesday night at 7 p.m., immediately following the men's match.
Lindsay's goal early in the match was a welcome site for the Wildcats, whose offense had mustered just one score over the past four matches. The Wildcats nursed the 1-0 advantage over the remainder of the first half and for much of the second before true freshman Jaclyn Thomas contributed the first point of her career with a beautiful pass to the head of Stretch, who pounded it into the net in the 75th minute.
Cal State Monterey Bay answered less than a minute later with Sarah Alderson's goal, but that was one of only eight shots the Otters got off in the entire match.
With one goal apiece, Stretch and Lindsay both brought their career total to 13. Stretch is also the team's active leader in career assists with eight and points with 34.
