CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State women’s soccer team played to its third straight double-overtime match Sunday against visiting Cal State San Bernardino. Though they’ve been somewhat frustrated that the first two ended in ties, in hindsight, they would have been thrilled with another draw. Megan Monahan, set up beautifully by Krista Feer and Katie Liby, ended the match with a rocket from directly in front of the goal at the 107:24 mark to give the visiting Coyotes the victory.
Chico State fell to 4-3-2 overall and 0-1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with the loss. Cal State San Bernardino, which finished dead last in the CCAA South Division standings last season, improved to a surprising 5-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the CCAA under first-year head coach Diego Bocanegra.
Brittney Doty’s header off Kasey Wall’s cross in the 65th minute was Chico State’s equalizer. San Bernardino had scored exactly 10 minutes earlier when Feer flicked in Casey Hirsch’s corner less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Both teams had opportunities to win in regulation. San Bernardino edged the Wildcats in shots taken 10-9 in the first 90 minutes, though Coyotes goalkeeper Laura Lyons was forced to make three saves to Chico State keeper Natalie Benskey’s two.
The Wildcats are back in action Friday night when they travel to face San Francisco State. Their next home match is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, against Cal State Stanislaus.
