CHICO, Calif. – The Chico State men’s soccer team is 6-0-0 for the first time since 1981 and the fourth time ever after the Wildcats beat Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 Friday night at University Soccer Stadium to the delight of 635 fans. Evan Armstrong headed home Ross Judge’s cross set up by Kyle Crain’s touched free kick in the 16th minute for the game-winner.
The 17th-ranked Wildcats, also ranked No. 3 in the West Region, improved to 2-0-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). They host Cal State San Bernardino this Sunday at 2 p.m.
Cal Poly Pomona fell to 2-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the CCAA.
Chico State finished the match with a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. They also had eight corner kick opportunities and held Cal Poly Pomona without one.
Michael Keohane made a pair of saves to earn his third shutout of the season.
Chico State had a number of great opportunities to build on its lead following Armstrong’s goal, but the Broncos defense made saves off the line on Benjamin Moukoko’s blast in the 18th minute and Kevin Gibson’s shot in the 73rd minute. Broncos goalkeeper Ryan Thomas also came up big to save Armstrong’s high blast from close range in the 57th minute.
Crain, Moukoko, and Zac Crim finished with four shots apiece to lead Chico State.
