ARCATA – Evan Armstrong’s goal less-than three minutes into the second half was the difference as the No. 5 regionally ranked Chico State Wildcats defeated Humboldt State, 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men’s soccer action Friday.
The Wildcats’ third-straight win improves their record to 13-4 overall and 9-4 in CCAA play. With the loss the Jacks fall to 8-7-4 overall and 3-7-3 in CCAA action.
After a quiet first half, the Wildcats scored the only goal of the game just 2:35 into the second half when Armstrong took a pass from Zac Crim, just before the HSU goalkeeper could intercept the ball, and put it into the back of the empty net for his seventh goal of the season. Crim well-placed pass was his sixth assist.
Mike Keohane recorded his eighth shutout of the season, recording four saves in the match.
For the game, the Wildcats outshot the Jacks 17-9, with both teams recording four shots on goal.
The Wildcats wrap up regular season play with a match at Sonoma State on Sunday. The match will be a teaser of what could be an eventual CCAA Championship Tournament bout, as both Chico and Sonoma will be playing in the four-team CCAA tournament, beginning next Friday, Nov. 7.
