CHICO, Calif. – Players always remember their first collegiate goal. Kasey Wall will remember hers even more fondly than most. Wall drove home the golden goal off a rebound off Jaclyn Thomas’ blast in the fifth minute of double-overtime to lift the Chico State women to a 2-1 victory against Cal State Monterey Bay Friday.
The freshman defender from Walnut Creek pushed up into the box for Anjie Goulding’s free kick. Thomas got the ball, maneuvered her way into danger, and drove a low liner to the left of Monterey Bay goalkeeper Stephanie Husted. She dove in time to stop the ball, but couldn’t corral it and it rolled toward Wall who sent it into the back of the net. Thomas, also a freshman, and Wall, each finished with a goal and an assist.
Chico State snapped a three-match losing streak – its first since the 2003 season – and improved to 7-7-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The victory was also the 140th of Wildcats Head Coach Kim Sutton’s 14-year career. She’s now 140-91-38, including 90-49-24 in her seven-plus seasons at Chico State.
Cal State Monterey Bay, which has never beaten or tied Chico State in nine tries, fell to 1-15-1 overall and 0-11-0 in the CCAA.
The visiting Otters actually led for a short time early in the contest. Cassidy Bennett got her head on a bouncing ball at the far post and struck it into the near corner in the 36th minute. Krysta Vukas sent the ball across for the assist.
The Wildcats got the equalizer less than five minutes later in the 41st minute. Wall headed a ball toward the near post and Thomas finished the job by heading it the remainder of the way into the net.
Chico State finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots and also had a 15-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Wildcats will wrap up their 2008 home campaign Sunday against CCAA North Division leader San Francisco State at 11:30 a.m.
