CHICO, Calif. - Murphy was the law Friday night at University Soccer Stadium. Jessica Murphy scored twice in the final six minutes to lift visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 3-1 win at Chico State Friday night. The Wildcats led 1-0 for the majority of the match before the Toros scored three unanswered goals to snap a four-match losing streak against Chico State.
Chico State fell to 6-6-2 overall and 2-4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with its fourth loss in the last six matches. Cal State Dominguez Hills, which has now won six straight matches, improved to 9-5-0 and remains in a deadlock with UC San Diego atop the CCAA South Division at 7-2-0.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Anjie Goulding, up from her spot in the center of the defense, bounced a pass to Lindsay at the upper corner of the box. Lindsay touched it once inside the aggressively charging defender and then slid a low bouncing ball inside the near post just 3:50 into the match.
Dominguez Hills got the equalizer with just over 35 minutes to play. After Alex Rodriguez saved a ball off the line to turn the Toros away for a moment, Yvonne Vasquez drew a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick. Melanie DeSalvo put it away with a liner to Wildcats goalkeeper Natalie Bensky’s right side.
Murphy got the game-winner in the 84th minute when she one-time DeSalvo’s high pass into the box from 12 yards after a bounce. She put the match away when she collected Paige Peel’s clearing pass behind the Chico Sate defense and then chipped over Bensky from 25 yards.
The match was marred by eight cards that were handed out, all in the second half. The Toros were forced to play with 10 players for the final 4:20 of the match after Melanie DeSalvo was cautioned for the second time, resulting in a red card.
Chico State hosts UC San Diego Sunday at 11:30 a.m. before finishing the home half of its schedule against Cal State Monterey Bay and San Francisco State the following weekend.
