Two meets into her collegiate career, freshman Destiny Everett has already established herself as a vital cog in Chico State's drive toward the NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Championships. Everett notched her first collegiate top-10 finish Saturday in Bellingham, Washington, helping the 'Cats take top honors at the Western Washington University Cross Country Classic at Sudden Valley Golf Course. Her rapid rise up the team's harrier ranks makes Everett the latest Wildcat of the Week.
Â
Everett was the second Chico State runner to complete the 6k loop. After teammate Talia Swangler posted a time of 22:09.7 en route to a seventh place finish, Everett immediately followed, stopping the clock at 22:18.8 to finish 10th in the 122-runner field and first among freshmen.
Â
Everett is one of four Wildcat women's cross country runners (Swangler, Angelica Salas, and Jalen Burns being the others) who have registered top 10 finishes so far this season.
Â
Not bad for someone who was considering redshirting and ran unattached during the first event of the year. Following her impressive 18th-place showing at the Stump Invitational, Everett ran in uniform the next time around, posting a solid 34th-place debut at the Capital Cross Challenge,
Â
Everett and the Wildcats will next pursue of the program's 12th straight California Collegiate Athletic Association title on October 26 in Arcata.
