Melissa Richardson, the Wildcats’ premier long-distance shooter, was also the team’s most consistent scorer and rebounder over the weekend, as Chico State opened up conference play with wins over San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay. For her efforts, Richardson has earned Wildcat of the Week honors.
Friday against the Gators, Richardson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points, plus contributed six rebounds, an assist, steal and blocked shot in the ’Cats 67-46 victory.
The senior from Issaquah, Wash., had the hot hand Saturday versus the Otters, hitting four of five shots – including three treys – for a team-high 11 points as the Wildcats rolled to a 71-52 win. Richardson also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out four assists and notched a steal to help Chico State improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season.
Richardson, who leads the ’Cats in steals and is second on the team in scoring (11.8 points per game) and rebounding (5.4), has now connected on 124 3-pointers in her Wildcat career, and is just 14 treys away from passing Marissa White for seventh place on Chico State’s all-time 3-pointers list.
