One look at Germay Tesfai’s Twitter profile reveals his love for Dutch Brothers Coffee. Someone must have told him there was a Double Chocolate Mocha at the finish line at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships this weekend in La Jolla.
Tesfai, our Wildcat of the Week, won the 1,500 meters and finished fourth the 5,000 meters to tally 15 valuable team points as the Wildcats won their 11th consecutive conference title.
Tesfai annihilated the field in the 1,500 meters, outkicking the pre-race favorites over the last lap to win the conference title by nearly two seconds in 3:53.45.
Double Torture? Not a problem. Tesfai took the track for the 5,000 meters just two hours later and blended his speed and stamina to secure a fourth-place finish and five more valuable team points.
The talented Tesfai notched NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters last season, capped by a fourth-place finish in the 10K at the CCAA Championships. He’s posted qualifying marks in both events this season as well, but will need a superb showing at Saturday’s West Coast Last Chance Meet 5K to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships. Good thing he’s got iced coffee in his veins.
