VALLEJO – Give the Chico State women's golf team some decent weather conditions to play in, and more often than not the Wildcats will put up the type of impressive numbers they registered Monday at the East Bay-Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. After enduring cold, windy and wet weather last week in Texas, the 'Cats flourished under sunny skies and mild temperatures at Vallejo's Hiddenbrooke Golf Club, shooting a collective 18-over par 306 on the opening 18 to grab a share of third place in the 15-team field, just seven strokes off the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
The five Chico State golfers racked up a combined 14 birdies on the day, with four Wildcats ranked in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard.
Dani O'Keefe was the author of three of those birdies to finish with a team-best score of 3-over par 75, good for a share of 10th place in the 83-player field. Abbey McGrew also collected three birdies and finished Monday's opening round in a tie for 15th place with a 4-over 76.
Bianca Armanini claimed a team-high four birdies on the day en route to a 5-over par 77, leaving her in a five-way tie for 19th place.
Spencer Downey used three birdies to earn a share of 24th place with a 6-over par 78. Sydney Zink rounded out the Wildcat scorecard with one birdie and a career-best round of 14-over 86.
Sonoma State sits atop the Pioneer Shootout's team leaderboard after one round, thanks to an 11-under par 299. The Seawolves head into Tuesday's final round three shots ahead of second place Grand Valley State, followed by Chico State and Tarleton State, which shared third place. St. Mary's (Texas) University rounded out the top five with a 19-over 307.
Hannah Gregg of Sonoma State was the lone golfer to break par, shooting an opening round 69 to lead the individual field by three strokes.
