Another Busy Weekend for the Wildcats

4/13/2024 11:43:00 PM

It was another split-squad weekend for the Chico State men's track & field team, only this time the Wildcats were at three meets.

While a majority of the team was at the ever-so-popular Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, some of the distance runners were running at the University of La Verne's Leopard Distance Carnival while a few Wildcats made the short drive to Butte College for the Black & Gold meet.

The Bryan Clay was the big challenge for the Wildcats, for it featured schools from all three NCAA Divisions from all over the country.

At least five Wildcats had top 10 finishes. Brayden McLaughlin ran a new personal best time of 29:21.02, which also strengthen both his NCAA Division II provisional mark and his position as the fourth fastest in program history. McLaughlin's time ranks him the best in the NCAA West Region and 17th in the nation.

Ty Thomson also leaped up a spot in the 400-meter dash record book, running a 47.70 at the Bryan Clay Invite to move above Dave Marden for fifth best. His time also earned him a provisional mark and it ranked him third best in the West Region.

Vincent Rinaldi, who already holds the school record in the 200-meter dash, didn't break his own mark (20.98) but did run a 21.40 that was sixth fastest.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Trey Suffredini, Rinaldi, Demetre Coffey and Thomson did run a 3:13.14 at the Bryan Clay Invitational that ranks sixth best in program history and it also stamped their names as provisional markers.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the freeway at La Verne, Hunter Dougherty ran a 9:07.30 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to set a provisional mark. His time is the fourth fastest in the West Region.

Between the three meets, a dozen Wildcats achieved new lifetime marks.

Before they turn their focus on the CCAA Championships, the Wildcats will get to remain home for the upcoming weekend hosting the Chico Invitational.
