CHICO, Calif. — The Chico State men's track & field team returned home Friday and Saturday for the annual Chico Invitational at University Stadium, battling through challenging conditions that included a three-hour lightning delay on Friday and continued wet weather into Saturday.
Despite the disruptions, the Wildcats delivered a strong all-around performance highlighted by event victories, personal bests, and an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark.
Damian Garcia provided one of the weekend's top moments under the lights Friday night, winning the mile in 4:00.51 to hit an NCAA provisional mark and set a personal best. His time narrowly missed the program's historic sub-four benchmark, continuing his standout run in the event.
The sprint group also impressed, led by Trey Suffredini's victory in the 200 meters (21.49, personal best) and a dominant showing in the 400 meters, where Brody Staley, Suffredini, Logan Cole, and Harrison Hubbard swept the top four spots. The Wildcats added another win in the 4x100-meter relay, as Staley, Suffredini, Cole, and Erik Lerner combined to run 41.60.
In the field events, Niko Lawrence cleared 2.00 meters (6' 6.75") to win the high jump, while Colin Totman recorded a personal-best leap of 7.00 meters (22' 11.75") to capture the long jump title. The throwing group continued its strong season, with Alejandro Molina winning the discus (46.99m), Tyler St. Laurent taking the hammer (50.02m), and Freddy Southworth leading the javelin (54.19m).
Additional highlights included Garrett Fenske winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in his collegiate debut (9:50.41) and Nathan Hernandez placing second in the pole vault with a personal-best clearance of 4.75 meters (15' 7").
