SACRAMENTO – The Chico State men's track & field team saw its first NCAA Division II provisional mark of the season achieved Saturday as senior Jordan Ausbie made the grade in the long jump at Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational.
Â
In a field that featured 20 teams from all three NCAA divisions as well as several two-year institutions, the Wildcats fared well in the scoring, recording 33 points to tie with UC Davis. Chico State, though, was third amongst NCAA Division II teams. Fresno Pacific scored 78 points to finished second in the meet and was followed by Academy of Art at 54.33. The University of California dominated the meet with 201.33 points.
Â
Ausbie's provisional mark in the long jump also happened to be his new personal best, reaching 7.33 meters. He ended up finishing fifth in the event.
Â
Chico State came very close to seeing another Wildcat receive a provisional mark in the 110m hurdles when Parker Williams ran a 14.70, missing the qualification by 0.26 seconds.
Â
The Wildcats did see two of their runners take the top two marks in the 3,000m steeplechase within the CCAA realm. Hunter Dougherty ran a personal-best 9:28.12 to take the top time in the conference and Anders Beil is right behind him at 9:45.34.
Â
Even with a crowded field, 20 Wildcats achieved new lifetime marks at the meet. Mario Giannini broke two personal bests, one in the 1500-meter run and the other in the 3000 meter.
Â
The Wildcats will get to enjoy spring break and will return to action March 29-30, when they will head to the Bay Area and go back-and-forth on the Dumbarton Bridge between the Mike Fanelli Track Classic at Chabot College in Hayward and at the Stanford Invitational.
