AZUSA—Historically, the level of competition is always taken up a notch or two at the Bryan Clay Invitational, and in this season's edition of the nationally-revered meet, the Chico State women's track & field team has certainly risen to the occasion. Saturday was no exception, as the Wildcats closed out the three-day event by reshuffling the program's record book while scoring three NCAA Provisional qualifying marks, seven personal bests and seven season bests at Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa.
Savannah Bailey led the Wildcat charge with arguably the best single day of her Chico State running career. She started Saturday by teaming with Danielle Bacon, Jessica James, and Chloe Taylor to finish 13th overall in the 4x100-meter relay, posting the quartet's season-best time of 47.66 seconds. Bailey then placed third in her heat and 25th out of a field of 88 in the 400-meter dash, with her season-best time of 55.62 seconds earning an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark.
Later in the day, Bailey recorded a 44th place finish and a personal best time in the 200-meter dash, with her mark of 24.70 seconds entering the Wildcat record books as the ninth-fastest 200 in program history. Bailey, along with Bacon, Taylor, and Taylor Lee, wrapped up the Bryan Clay Invitational by running the second-fastest 4x400-relay in Wildcat women's track & field history—the foursome's time of 3:47.13 earning another NCAA Provisional qualifying mark while coming within .09 seconds of setting a new school record in the event.
Bailey wasn't the only Wildcat who turned in a superlative performance Saturday. Marissa D'Atri earned an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark and posted the fifth-fastest 1,500-meter time in program history at 4:29.29, winning her heat in the Open A competition and finishing 21st overall.
Jessica James scored a PR in the 100-meter dash, finishing second in her heat and 62nd overall with a time of 12.41 seconds. Selina Schillig earned a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 36.29 meters (she finished third in her flight and 24th in a 42-athlete field), while Hannah Tiffany and Jasmine Fletcher delivered PR efforts in the 1,500-meter run. In a field of 188 runners in the Open B competition, Tiffany finished third in her heat and 12th overall with a time of 4:37.70—shaving nearly 20 seconds off her previous best in the event. Fletcher placed 49th overall, stopping the clock at 4:43.98.
Others 'Cats securing season-best marks Saturday included Ava Cavallaro (11.67 meters, 29th place finish) and Citlalli Fernandez (10.25 meters, 38th place) in the shot put, Natalie Muse in the triple jump (11.01 meters, 56th place), Gracie Dupuis in the Bryan Clay Invitational's 1,500-meter run Open B competition (matching her season-best time of 4:54.37), and Katie Hawley in the 1,500 Open A category, finishing 98th in a field of 188 runners with a time of 4:35.29.
Chloe Taylor, Josie Peterson, and Ashley Brown were high finishers in some very crowded events. Taylor placed 14th in a 66-runner 400-meter hurdles field with a time of 1:01.05, while Peterson and Brown finished 12th (39.68 meters) and 15th (38.17 meters), respectively, among 42 athletes competing in the javelin throw.
The Chico State women's track & field team now turns its attention to the final home meet—and last meet before the CCAA Championships—when the Wildcats host the Chico Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday at University Stadium.
