Chico State Delivers Big Marks, Distance Dominance in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Chico State women's track & field team continued its strong start to the season, turning in impressive performances and recording multiple NCAA Division II provisional marks at the Johnny Mathis Invitational.

The Wildcats have only competed in a quarter of their scheduled meets this spring, with a long list of opportunities to continue improving coming up in April. Next Saturday, Chico State will travel to our CCAA neighbors to the north for the Cal Poly Humboldt Invitational. 


Notable Highlights

  • Four Wildcats achieved provisional marks in the 5,000 meters, sweeping the top four spots in the race and currently holding four of the top five times in the nation. Iresh Molina (16:48.35)Megan Malloy (16:48.76)Della Molina (16:49.93) and Paulina Martins (16:51.59) dominated the event, finishing within four seconds of one another.
  • Junior Charlie Ham was the only other Wildcat to record a provisional mark, clearing 3.85 meters in the pole vault. Ham's mark ranks seventh in the nation this season.
  • In just her fourth collegiate meet, Savannah Sawyer recorded two season-best times in the 100 meters (12.23) and 200 meters (25.45), finishing in the top three in both events.
  • Teresa Vasconcellos delivered a strong performance in the 200 meters, winning the event with a personal-best time of 24.87.
  • Zoe Aitken claimed the top spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best 11:08.52.
  • Daeja Downing had a standout day in the throws, winning the discus (34.61m) and placing second in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 35.08 meters.
  • In the 1500 meters, Chico State placed two athletes in the top three, with Sienna Bianchi finishing second (4:36.65) and Catherine McGuire placing third with a personal-best 4:36.69.
  • The Wildcats' 4x400 relay team of Crystal Rosales, Emma Gaddy, Destin Armstrong and Teresa Vasconcellostook first place with a time of 3:57.51.
  • Annabelle Low finished second in the high jump, clearing 1.50 meters.
  • Talynn Schroeder found a third place finish in the 100m hurdles, clocking a 14.93 in the event.
  • The 4x100m relay squad of Tianna Thompson, Madi Monroe, Teresa Vasconcellos and Crystal Rosales finished on top of the podium with a 47.03 clocked time.
