'Cats, Seawolves to play doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday

First pitch for both days are at 11 a.m. Chico State hopes to get a true road series in for the first time this season

3/22/2023 3:37:00 PM

Chico State's baseball team will hope a third time truly is a charm as the Wildcats will make a third attempt to play a true road series this weekend at Sonoma State. Because Mother Nature hasn't been too kindly to Northern California, the two ballclubs agreed to play back-to-back doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. Both are 11 a.m. first pitches.

Fans can listen to the series on KPAY 1290-AM with Mike Baca on the call or can watch the games on the CCAA Network. Accessing the CCAA Network requires a monthly fee of $9.95 and will provide you access to all contests scheduled within the conference.

The Wildcats are coming off an impressive three-game sweep over then-No. 28 Cal Poly Pomona last weekend to run their win streak to five straight. The streak has also improved Chico State's record to 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Since entering conference play, Chico State's pitching staff has maintained 3.66 ERA, which ranks second best in the league. Left-hander Cody Gentry, coming off a solid outing against Cal Poly Pomona in game three of the series, allowed one earned run against the Broncos to lower his ERA to 2.38. Josh Verdon has appeared in five of the seven conference games and had saved three of them.

On the offensive end, Chico State continues to see production from Jacob Jablonski, who is currently batting .500 against the last two conference opponents and his .958 slugging percentage leads the league by a large margin.

Sonoma State, under the leadership of 38th-year head coach John Goelz, is 6-7 overall but is still in search of a conference win in five attempts. The Seawolves return home after getting swept at defending conference champions Cal State Monterey Bay last weekend. Offensively, the Seawolves are led by outfielder Kenny Decelle, who is hitting .333 with two home runs and 13 RBIs.

Despite playing 16 games this season, the 'Cats have yet to play a true road game. The only time they were on the road was the season opener in Houston, Texas at neutral-site Minute Maid Park. Chico State is currently 1-2 away from 'The Nett.'
