The Chico State baseball team may have earned two important California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) wins over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, but how the Wildcats got the victories were completely different.
In game one, Chico State had to rebound from a collapse in the middle innings and a four-run seventh-inning rally gave them a 7-5 win. Game two was highlighted by Cody Gentry, who gave up one earned run in five innings and was backed by an offense that slugged in four of their runs to take a 5-2 win and take the critical series win.
Though the series finally is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday, the forecast is calling for showers in the middle of the night and all through the day. Be sure to check back on ChicoWildcats.com or on Twitter at @ChicoWildcats for updates.
Jeffrey Ray had an outstanding day, going 5-for-7 with two doubles and a solo home run in game two's sixth inning to add more cushion to the 5-2 result. Jacob Jablonski had only two hits on the day and both were home runs, both to the deepest part of Nettleton Stadium in center field.
Josh Verdon pulled double duty by checking into both games and getting saves in each one. He threw a combined three shutout innings of relief with one hit and no walks alongside four strikeouts.
Chico State (10-6, 5-2 CCAA) opened game one of the doubleheader with a 2-0 lead after Logan Drummond clobbered a two-run home run to right field. Jablonski made it 4-0 in the third inning with a solo home run.
Cal Poly Pomona (13-8, 5-6 CCAA) would rally in the middle innings, scoring one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. The seventh inning rally began Ray sinling up the middle and Drummond and Jablonski loading the bases on back-to-back walks. Xabi Iparraguirre tied the game with an RBI single hit very hard to third base. Kyle Dobson hit a one-out single through the right side to give Chico State the lead back and Jackson delivered an insurance run with an RBI base hit to center.
Ernie Arambula opened the scoring in the second inning of game two, when he hit a two-out single through the hole on the left side to score in Dobson. Jablonski would make it a 2-0 lead with his second solo shot just making it over the fence in deep center field.
In the fourth inning, Ray doubled the score with an RBI two-bagger and Jablonski brought him home on a fielder's decision.
