Wildcats return to action hosting Broncos at “The Nett”

Chico State resumes play after missing another weekend series

3/16/2023 9:41:00 AM

After another scheduled road trip turned into a rainout last weekend, the Chico State baseball team will turn to the friendly confines of Nettleton Stadium again in getting a series into the books as the Wildcats welcome Cal Poly Pomona for a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) set. The series begins Friday at 5 p.m. followed by the traditional 9/7-inning doubleheader Saturday at noon and the finale Sunday at 11 a.m.

Fans can follow the action locally on KPAY Sports 1290-AM, with Mike Baca calling the play-by-play. Baca can also be heard via simulcast on the CCAA Network. Accessing the live video streaming requires a monthly subscription fee that grants users access to every CCAA event on the network, home and away.

An important note to those planning on being at University Softball Field this weekend: the Nettleton Stadium concession stand will not be open. We apologize for the inconvenience.

While Chico State had a series split with Stanislaus State in the last homestand, "The Nett" got the save for keeping the tarps off the field. Now the Wildcats will ask for the same from their own ballpark going into the weekend with the Broncos. According to accuweather.com, the forecast calls for less than a 25 percent chance of rain on Friday and Saturday. Sunday, though, is forecasted for 83 percent chance of showers. Be sure to check ChicoWildcats.com or on Twitter at @ChicoWildcats for updates.

The 'Cats got a good series result from Jacob Jablonski against Stanislaus State, hitting .563 with two doubles, three walks and three RBIs. The nine hits he recorded bumped his season average up to .440, which moved him to fourth-best in the CCAA after the series. Right-hander Dylan Day also had a gem performance on the mound in a 7-1 game three win, throwing seven innings with no earned runs allowed while striking out five and issuing no walks.

Cal Poly Pomona, the 2022 CCAA Tournament champions, is coming off a home series win over defending conference regular-season champions Cal State Monterey Bay last weekend. Although 13-5 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA, the Broncos have seen success in their pitching this season, which ranks first in the CCAA. Junior right-hander Rhys Stevens owns the seventh-best ERA in the nation with a 0.39. He's only allowed one earned run in 23.1 innings pitched this season.

Chico State will be looking for its first series win over Cal Poly Pomona since 2017.

San Francisco State Series Update: In search of potential makeup dates, the Wildcats and Gators have agreed to play April 11-12. Both dates will be single games at 3 p.m. The two sides are still in search for a suitable date to play the 9/7-inning doubleheader. Stay tuned.
