Rain, wind combine to shut down final round of Pioneer Shootout

Chico State men’s golf finishes weather-abbreviated tournament in third place

ALAMEDA—Mother Nature provided a double dose of problems for the Chico State men's golf team Tuesday at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. First was the issue of rain and standing water on the Corica Park South Course, forcing the tournament's third and final round to start a half-hour later than scheduled. Play did eventually get underway, but then extremely high winds with gusts from 40-45 miles per hour brought the round—and the tournament—to a premature halt. With scores reverting back to Monday's results, the Wildcats officially finished third in the 15-team field with a 36-hole score of 6-under par 570.

Tyler Ashman notched his second straight top 10 tournament finish and fourth of the season, with Monday's two-round total of 5-under par 139 leaving him in a tie for sixth place overall.

On the strength of 2-under par 142s during Monday's first two rounds, both Dakota Ochoa and Naoki Easterday claimed a share of 11th place in the 94-player field. For Ochoa, it marked the fifth time this season he's finished in the top 15 on the individual leader board, while Easterday posted his second top 15 tournament showing of the 2022–23 campagin.

Giuliano Kaminski's 36-hole score of 3-over par 147 on Monday was good for a share of 45th place, while Landon Williams, playing as an individual, shot a 77-75-152 to finish tied for 67th place.

Mark Noonan rounded out the Wildcats' scorecard, placing 83rd with a two-round total of 156.

Thanks to a 10-under par 566 on Monday, Cal State San Marcos was declared the winner of the shortened Pioneer Shootout, finising three shots better than runner-up Simon Fraser (-7 569). Chico State (570) placed third—the Wildcats' fifth top five team finish of the season—with Cal State Dominguez Hills (571) and Holy Names (573) placing fourth and fifth, respectively, on the team leader board.

Andy Yoon of Cal State Dominguez Hills took home medalist honors with a two round score of 8-under par 136.

The Chico State men's golf team returns to action March 27–28 in its final tune-up before next month's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. The Wildcats will tee it up as part of the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at the Turlock Golf and Country Club.
