SAN FRANCISCO—Cameron Duquette and Joshua O'Neill each posted NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks in the 10,000 meters on the opening day of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic Thursday at Cox Stadium, kicking off what the Chico State men's track and field team is hoping will be a successful weekend.
Duquette finished sixth overall in a time of 30:00.34, easily under the NCAA provisional standard of 30:35.82. O'Neill, only a freshman, was not far behind. He crossed the line in 30:19.08 in 12
th place. Michael Ramirez (30:48.91) and Omar Alvarez-Hernandez (31:04.33 also ran inside of the top 20 in the 56-man field.
Peter Normann III also competed Thursday, completing the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:21.62 — just eight seconds shy of a provisional mark.
Duquette's effort is just five seconds short of an all-time top-10 mark in Chico State history. Prior to Thursday's race, only 15 athletes in the nation (one in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) had run faster.
Even before Thursday's marks, members of Chico State's men's track and field team had combined for 13 of the nation's top 40 NCAA DII marks this season. They are currently ranked No. 37 in the nation, No. 4 in the West Region, and No. 2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association according to the USTFCCCA Rating Index. Vincent Rinaldi (100 meters) and Cristian Brady (pole vault) each ranked No. 1 in the West.
Fans can keep up with the results online, with links available at
www.chicowildcats.com in the calendar section on the homepage, and on the men's track & field schedule page. A live video stream of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic is also available online; a subscription fee is required to view.
A total of 40 Wildcats are competing against a competitive field at San Francisco State's Cox Stadium, including a number of Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and junior college programs. Meanwhile, five Wildcats are taking part in the Chabot Invitational on Thursday, though their results have not yet been made available. Keep an eye out for them at www.chicowildcats.com on Friday evening.
Friday is dominated by distance races at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, with the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs taking center stage. The day's competition concludes with the 4x400-meter relay.
Saturday's final day of the Mike Fanelli Track Classic is a mixture of distance events, sprints, hurdles, relays, and field events. Two special events the Wildcats will take part in are the distance medley—a relay consisting of 1,200-, 400-, 800-, and 1,600-meter legs—and the meet-closing sprint medley, with a pair of 200-meter legs combined with a 400- and 800-meter leg.
