NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Track & Field All-Region teams and Chico State earned 10 All-West Region selections across nine events.
The Wildcats' honorees included Logan Cole (4x400-meter relay), Damian Garcia (800 meters, 1,500 meters), Mario Giannini (5,000 meters, 10,000 meters), Harrison Hubbard (4x400-meter relay), Alex Lamoureux (1,500 meters), Niko Lawrence (high jump), Brody Staley (200 meters, 400 meters, 4x400-meter relay), Trey Suffredini (4x400-meter relay), Ronin Tidd (decathlon) and Jesus Villarreal (10,000 meters).
Several Wildcats added to their career All-Region resumes this spring. Suffredini earned his second consecutive All-Region honor in the 4x400-meter relay, while Staley repeated in both the 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay. Garcia collected the sixth All-Region honor of his career and third straight in the 1,500 meters, adding a second consecutive selection in the 800 meters. Giannini earned his second career All-Region recognition in the 10,000 meters.
Chico State's 10 All-West Region selections ranked second among CCAA programs behind only Cal State LA's 11 and ahead of Cal Poly Pomona's eight, Stanislaus State's seven and Cal State San Marcos' six. Western Washington led the region with 17 selections, while Fresno Pacific totaled 14.
The Wildcat quartet of Cole, Hubbard, Staley and Suffredini earned All-Region recognition in the 4x400-meter relay after posting the second-fastest time in the West Region this season at 3:08.92 during the Franson Last Chance meet at Azusa Pacific.
Garcia highlighted Chico State's individual selections following one of the top middle-distance seasons in Division II history. The junior enters the postseason ranked No. 1 in the West Region in the 1,500 meters after running a Chico State-record 3:35.61 at the Franson Last Chance, while also ranking second in the region in the 800 meters with a personal-best 1:48.23. Earlier this week, Garcia was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for those performances.
Giannini collected two All-Region honors after producing top-two regional marks in both distance events. The junior ranks second in the West Region in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:05.34 from the Mike Fanelli Track Classic and owns the region's top 10,000-meter mark at 29:04.56, recorded at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Lamoureux joined Garcia as an All-Region performer in the 1,500 meters after climbing to No. 2 in the West Region with a personal-best 3:45.86 at the Franson Last Chance. Lawrence earned All-Region honors in the high jump after clearing 2.05 meters, tied for fifth-best in the region this season, while Tidd ranked fifth in the decathlon with 6,757 points at the Brutus Hamilton Multis. Villarreal rounded out Chico State's individual honorees with the fifth-fastest 10,000-meter time in the West Region at 29:55.18.
