Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO—The way the Chico State softball team has performed on the road this season, it may never want to come home. The Wildcats have won an impressive 16 of 20 games away from University Softball Field so far in 2022, and in Friday's series-opening doubleheader in the Bay Area against San Francisco State, the 'Cats continued to blend productive at-bats with powerhouse pitching to extend their current winning streak to 10 straight. Chico State took both ends of the twin bill, beating the Gators 13-0 and 6-2.
Chico State, ranked No. 11 in the nation, saw its record rise to 20-4 on the season while maintaining a share of first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 12-2 conference mark. San Francisco State dipped to 12-12 overall and 7-7 in CCAA play.
The 'Cats' offense produced 19 runs and 20 hits on the afternoon. Hailey Seva had two doubles among her three hits and drove in five, while Alani Nguyen had three hits and four RBI. Six other Wildcats—Lanie Blomquist, Grace Stover, Reilani Peleti, Nina Revoir, Amanda Metzger, and Angel Lopez—each contributed two hits on the day as Chico State's team batting average soared to .310 on the year.
In the pitcher's circle, Wildcat starters Brooke Larsen and Katelyn Oldwin did not allow an earned run the entire afternoon, giving up just six Gators hits, and combining to strike out a total of 17 San Francisco State batters.
The opening game of Friday's doubleheader saw the Wildcats plate at least one run in every inning. In the top of the first, Nguyen singled home Stover, and in the second a base hit by Seva and a San Francisco State error resulted in a pair of unearned runs, putting Chico State up 3-0.
The 'Cats extended their lead in the top of the third when Revoir scored from third on a passed ball, and later in the inning Lopez singled home Larsen. An RBI groundout by Nguyen in the top of the fourth inning knocked in Seva to make it a 6-0 contest.
Chico State blew the game open in the top of the fifth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring seven times. Amanda Metzger singled and was promptly doubled home by Lopez, who scored along with Stover and Rachael Bles on a bases-loaded double by Seva. An RBI single by Peleti and a Larsen sacrifice fly accounted for two more Wildcat runs, and when Revoir capped off the big inning by scoring on a wild pitch, Chico State was sitting on top of a big double-digit lead.
Larsen struck out a pair in setting down the Gators in the bottom of the fifth inning, ending the game and giving Chico State the 13-0 victory.
Larsen scattered two hits and fanned seven en route to her CCAA-leading 12th win, 13th complete game and seventh shutout of the season.
Game two started out as a classic pitcher's duel between Oldwin and San Francisco State righthander Taylor Kelly. While Oldwin retired the first 10 Gators batters she faced, Kelly set down 14 straight Wildcats before Metzger shot a two-out single to right field. Blomquist immediately followed with an RBI double to give Chico State the first run of the game.
The Wildcats used another big inning to take control in the top of the sixth. Tayler Berens stroked a one-out single and came around to score on a double by Seva. Nguyen delivered a base hit to chase home Seva and Stover, and with the bases loaded, Blomquist singled to center to drive in Revoir and Alexandria Allen to give Chico State a 6-0 lead.
San Francisco State finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning, as two singles, a Wildcat error, and a bases-loaded walk brought the Gators to within four and brought the potential tying run to the plate. Oldwin took care of business though, fanning Sydney Jenkins with the bases loaded to secure the final out and give Chico State the 6-2 win and the doubleheader sweep.
Oldwin, now 6-2 on the season, allowed just four hits and struck out 10 in going the distance for the fifth time this year.
