Kyle Dobson did not start any of the Chico State baseball team's first five games. It's safe to say he became a fixture in the lineup during the Wildcats' dominating four-game sweep of Sonoma State over the weekend. The sophomore started all four games at designated hitter and hit .667 (8-for-12) with two doubles, a triple, and seven runs batted in. Dobson slugged 1.000 and reached base at a .714 clip.
In Friday's series-opening 16-6 win, Dobson reached base all four times he came to the plate. He went 3-for-3, drew a walk, knocked in three, and scored a run. In Saturday's first game of a doubleheader, the closest game of the series, Dobson's RBI-triple gave Chico State a 2-1 lead in the fifth and his two-run double made it 4-1 in the seventh in a game the Wildcats eventually won 7-1. In the second game of the day, a 7-3 win, Dobson singled and walked in three at-bats. In Sunday's series finale, Dobson went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in Chico State's 11-3 win.
The sophomore product of Santa Margarita Catholic High School now leads the CCAA with a .591 batting average (13-for-22) and ranks second in on-base percentage (.615) and third in slugging percentage (.864).
Dobson went 3-for-6 coming off the bench in the Wildcats' first five games and drew his first start in the second game of Chico State's February 16 doubleheader against Simpson. He went 2-for-4 and drew a walk in that game and has been in the starting lineup ever since.
Dobson and the Wildcats will hit the road this weekend for a four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos were picked as the favorite to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title prior to the season and Chico State was picked to finish second. The series starts with a single game Friday at noon, continues with a doubleheader Saturday at noon, and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.

During our short time back together in 2021–22, Chico State's student-athletes are already back to blowing us away on every front. They've generated video companions aimed at encouraging all fellow Wildcats as part of their
Scratch the Stigma initiative, re-launching with an enhanced version in March. They've earned six postseason berths, highlighted by CCAA and West Regional Men's Cross Country championships and the men's basketball team's highest-ever national and regional rankings. And they've exceled in the classroom, combining for 27 perfect 4.0 GPAs, while 217—more than two-thirds of them—earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
