’Cats Shooting For 10-0 Sunday

Men’s basketball team hoping to break one record and tie another versus Stanislaus State

12/31/2021 1:37:00 PM

Stanislaus State bore early witness to the Chico State men's basketball team's historic start. The Wildcats rolled the Warriors 72-44 in their fifth game of the season and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener for both. Sunday, they'll meet again in an Acker Gym matinee set for 3 p.m. as the Wildcats attempt to break the program record for consecutive CCAA victories (11) and tie the school record for consecutive wins to start a season (10). The women's game will tip off at 1.

Chico State is 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the CCAA. Stanislaus State is 4-6 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA. Tickets are on sale at Acker Gym beginning Sunday at noon. All fans (age 12 and older) attending Chico State basketball events must show proof of their fully-vaccinated status, or proof of a negative COVID-19 test administered by a healthcare professional from within 72 hours of the start of the event.

PLEASE NOTE: In accordance with recently announced state health and safety guidelines, fans must wear masks at all times while indoors on the Chico State campus.

Fans unable to attend in person can follow the action locally on KPAY Sports 1290-AM Radio, with Mike Baca and Mike Wessel's broadcast also accessible on the Internet via the Wildcat Athletics website. The play-by-play on KPAY will begin immediately following Sunday's Las Vegas Raiders-Indianapolis Colts football broadcast, which kicks off at 10 a.m.

During their win in Turlock on November 27, the Wildcats limited Stanislaus State to four first-half field goals. And the team's offense came along for the party. The Wildcats buried 55% of their first-half shots and led 41-13 at the break. Since then, they have played even better, putting together some of the most impressive basketball on the college landscape.

They are one of five unbeaten NCAA Division II teams remaining in the nation. They have made 55 of 103 3-point attempts over their last four games while limiting opponents to 65 points or fewer in eight of their nine contests. The Wildcats lead the CCAA (which features three of the nation's top 11-ranked teams) in blocked shots per game (4.4), fewest fouls (147), field-goal percentage (49.8), field-goal percentage defense (39.0), 3-point field goals per game (10.2), and 3-point field-goal percentage (41.8). They also rank second in the CCAA and third in the nation in 3-point field-goal percentage defense (25.7), ninth in 3-point field goal percentage, and 10th in field-goal percentage defense.

The Wildcats moved up one spot to No. 4 in the most recent D2SIDA National Media Poll and up two spots in the most recent NABC (coaches) Poll to No. 5. Both rankings are the highest in the history of the program. This is the second time a Chico State men's basketball team has won its first nine games. The 1942–43 Wildcats are the only other to start 9-0. That team was 10-0 before sustaining its first loss.

Malik Duffy ranks third in the nation and 2nd in the CCAA (behind only Stanislaus State's Tony Singleton) with a 3-point shooting percentage of 51.1. Isaiah Brooks leads the CCAA and ranks 16th in the country with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.45. Kelvin Wright Jr. leads the CCAA in blocked shots per game (1.89) and total blocks (38).

The Wildcats will hit the road for the week of January 6–8. They will face Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros recently announced that no fans will be allowed in the facility for Saturday's matchup.
