’Cats crash the record books in dominating sweep of Humboldt State

Chico State volleyball sets new program mark by posting a .515 team hitting percentage

Box Score The Chico State volleyball team put it all together and made a little history to boot on its way to a lopsided match sweep of Humboldt State Friday at Acker Gym. The Wildcats not only won handily, but they did it with an offensive efficiency that was good enough to topple a 31-year old program record. Setting a new Chico State volleyball standard with an eye-popping .515 hitting percentage on the night, the 'Cats needed just a little over an hour to down the visiting Lumberjacks 25-13, 25-14, 25-9.

Chico State committed just six errors on 66 swings, delivering 40 kills in beating Humboldt State for the second time this season. More importantly, the Wildcats improved to 9-14 on the season and 5-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Humboldt State lost its ninth straight match to slip to 3-15 overall and 2-13 in conference play.

Makaela Keeve and Zoe DiNardo led a balanced Chico State attack with 10 kills apiece, while Lizzie Wilson and Kelley Jacome registered nine kills. Between them, the 'Cat quartet committed just three attack errors the entire night.

Brooke Ono dished out 31 assists, racked up nine digs, and contributed two blocks and a service ace. Kennedy Greenwood also had nine digs to go along with four assists; Jane McNulty added six digs and three aces, and Ali Collins floored a pair of serves for the victorious 'Cats.

The 'Cats wasted little time setting the tone for the evening, using kills by Wilson, DiNardo, and Keeve to jump out to a 12-4 lead in the opening set. Humboldt State briefly crept to within seven at 14-7, but Chico State finished things off on an 11-6 run—highlighted by a Mcnulty ace, a Keeve/Ono combo block, and kills by DiNardo, Jacome, and Bree Rodriguez—to win going away 25-13.

The two teams split the first 14 points of the second set before the Wildcats once again got hot—aces by Ono and Collins, a Keeve solo block, and kills from Jacome, DiNardo, Keeve, and Wilson keyed an 11-5 run to put Chico State up 18-12. The Lumberjacks whittled the deficit to 19-14, only to see the 'Cats rip off six unanswered points—DiNardo delivering three kills during the stretch—to wrap up the set with a 25-14 victory.

The third set was a back and forth affair early on, with Chico State grabbing a 4-3 lead before Humboldt moved out in front 8-7. The roof then officially caved in on the Lumberjacks, as the Wildcats outscored Humboldt 18-1 the rest of the way. Following a Jacome kill that tied the score, Collins held serve for nine straight points, and with the 'Cats leading 18-9 Mcnulty took over the serve and never relinquished it. Chico State took it to the house with a 7-0 run—Keeve leading the charge with three kills, while freshman Taylor Whyte posted her first career kill and first-ever block as a Wildcat—to decisively complete the match sweep with an impressive 25-9 win.
