Postseason Hopes Hang in Balance for Men's Soccer Squad

| By:

Men’s soccer in sixth place with three matches to go

The Chico State men's soccer team holds a three-point edge with three matches to go in the race for the California Collegiate Athletic Association's sixth and final postseason berth. The Wildcats (5-9-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the CCAA) control their own destiny. It won't be easy, but if it was, it wouldn't be worth fighting for.

Chico State starts the final stretch on the road Friday at 4:30 p.m. against first-place Cal State L.A. and plays its final regular-season road match Sunday morning at 11:30 against second-place Cal Poly Pomona. The Wildcats wrap up the regular season at home against fifth-place Humboldt State Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

All games are available on the CCAA Network. Links to the streaming broadcast are on the men's soccer schedule page and calendar section of the homepage at www.chicowildcats.com.

The 8th-ranked team in the nation, Cal State L.A. (9-2-2, 7-0-1) leads Cal Poly Pomona (9-2-3, 6-0-2) by two points in the race for the conference title. Those teams will meet Thursday while Chico State takes on Humboldt State. But the Wildcats hope to hurt both of their chances this weekend and give third-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (18 points) some hope. Cal State San Bernardino is fourth with 16 points, Humboldt State is fifth with 14 points, and Chico State has 12. Cal State Monterey Bay, which wraps up its season with three consecutive road contests—at Cal State San Marcos, at Cal State San Bernardino and at Cal State Dominguez Hills—trails the Wildcats by three points. Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos have seven points each, and Stanislaus State has six.

The top two teams in the final standing earn first-round byes. The teams that finish third and fourth will host a first-round CCAA Tournament match on Sunday, Nov. 7. The teams that finish fifth and sixth will be on the road.

Before COVID led to the cancellation of the 2020 campaign Chico State had made the CCAA Tournament field four times in a row and finished .500 or better 12 straight seasons. Both of those streaks are on the line.

Health and safety policies vary from campus to campus. If you plan to attend a match at Cal State L.A. or Cal Poly Pomona this weekend, make sure to review the respective protocols.
