Wildcats Return to PV High School Pitch on Senior Weekend

Higuera, Renteria and Mayo to be celebrated prior to Sunday’s match

There are the myriad of victories. NCAA Championship Tournament berths. Academic accolades. But perhaps the biggest impact that Servando Higuera, Cooper Renteria and Anais Mayo made during their collegiate soccer careers at Chico State came in the aftermath of the awful Camp Fire. They and their teammates took days off from practice to visit the temporary shelters and play soccer with the displaced kids. And later, they took the time to volunteer to help at the Chris Wondolowski Soccer Camp for the Ridge's youth, including players from Paradise High School programs.

That camp took place at Pleasant Valley High School where, in a strange twist, the Wildcats will play Sunday night at 7. Their match against Sonoma State, before which the collegiate careers of Higuera, Renteria and Mayo will be honored and celebrated, will take place on the Pleasant Valley High School Stadium turf field at 1475 East Avenue. The move was made due to all the wet weather forecast in the area between now and then in an effort to keep the grass turf at University Soccer Stadium playable for the remainder of the campaign.

Sunday's match will mark the end of a crucial weekend for the Wildcats, who have won two in a row to improve to 4-8-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and now control their postseason destiny at the midway point of conference play. First, Chico State will square off against San Francisco State (4-6-3, 0-3-3) Friday at 7 p.m. at University Soccer Stadium. Sonoma State, which will play at Humboldt State Friday before making the trip to Chico, enters the weekend with a record of 5-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the CCAA.
