The Chico State men's soccer team is one of 14 NCAA Division II men's soccer teams still unbeaten and untied through Wednesday night's matches. The Wildcats are also one of only two unranked in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll.
Â
Only time will tell if the voters' assessment of the Wildcats is accurate. If the Wildcats have their way, they won't be unranked for long. They would almost certainly force the hands of the voting committee with a pair of good results during their challenging California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)-opening road trip this weekend.
Â
Chico State (4-0-0) will play at perennial West Region power Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at 7 p.m. at Dignity Health Sports Park Main Stadium, home to the LA Galaxy. Sunday at 11:30 a.m. they will face 7
th-ranked Cal State LA at University Stadium on the CSULA campus. Â
The Wildcats have been on quite a roll of late, having won six straight and 10 of their last 11 regular-season matches while posting eight shutouts during that run.
Â
They've outscored their four opponents this season by a combined 10-2 and defender Garrett Hogbin leads all Division II players with four match-winning goals. Their team goals-against average of 0.50 ranks 13
th in the nation, while their scoring average (2.50 goals per game) ranks 25
th.
Â
Cal State Dominguez Hills has stumbled out of the gates to a record of 1-3-1. But while searching for its first win in Carson since 2013, Chico State will not overlook the Toros, who have played a tough schedule and have shut out each of their last two opponents.
Â
Goals by Matt Hafizi and Ronan McEnroe keyed the Wildcats' 2-0 win against the Toros last season and stretched their unbeaten streak in the series to three matches (2-0-1). Cal State Dominguez Hills still leads the all-time series 12-10-3 and the Wildcats are just 3-7-2 all-time against the Toros in Carson.
Â
Cal State LA is 5-0, having posted a trio of shutouts and 14-3 goal differential. The Golden Eagles were the coaches' selection to win the CCAA title this year and return all seven of their All-CCAA honorees from last season.
Â
A win Sunday in LA would snap a long stretch of frustrations for Chico State, which hasn't beaten the Golden Eagles since 2012 and has not beaten them in Los Angeles since 2003 when they went on to advance to the NCAA title match.
Â
Friday's match marks the first of four in a row on the road to start conference play for the Wildcats. After that tough stretch, they'll play five of their final eight at home.
