Free passes prove costly in Wildcats’ loss

Navarro drives in a pair and DeVito delivers two hits to pace offense

Box Score HAYWARD—Free 90s have proved costly for the Chico State baseball team throughout the season. That was again the case in a 10-4 loss at Cal State East Bay Tuesday in a makeup game in Hayward.

Chico State pitchers walked seven and four of those Pioneers came around to score. Cal State East Bay also scored four unearned runs on four Chico State errors.

The Wildcats fell to 21-18 overall and 17-17 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and are now tied with Cal Poly Pomona for sixth place. Six teams will advance to the CCAA Tournament.

Cal State East Bay walked only one Wildcats hitter in improving to 19-23 overall and 16-20 in the CCAA.

JT Navarro drove in a pair of runs for the Wildcats and Alex DeVito delivered a pair of hits.

Chico State grabbed the lead briefly in the third when Kristian Scott was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Navarro's base hit. The Pioneers answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame and then scored three times in the fifth, aided by walk and an error.

Limited to only three hits over the first six innings, the Wildcats put together a rally in the seventh. DeVito singled, Turner Olson walked, and Myles Moran drove in a run with a single to right. Pinch hitter Cody Wissler than drove the first pitch he saw into left field for an RBI single, cutting the lead to 4-3. But that was it for the Wildcats in the inning and the Pioneers answered with two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning and then blew the game open in the eighth with four more runs.
