Midweek makeup has huge postseason implications

Wildcats at Cal State East Bay Tuesday afternoon before final home series

The most amazing part of the Chico State baseball team's turnaround following an 0-6 start to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play was a three-win day in Hayward on March 11. The Wildcats completed the final three frames of a storm-delayed come-from-behind victory to start the day before sweeping the previously-scheduled doubleheader. That started a stretch of seven wins in seven days that was part of the 10-game win streak that kick-started Chico State's postseason push.

The Wildcats, now 21-17 overall and 17-16 in the CCAA, will be back in Hayward Tuesday to complete that series with a single game set to begin at 1 p.m.

They've had their ups and downs since they were last in Hayward, winning one series, losing another, and splitting four more, and are now part of a wild race featuring eight teams battling for the final four CCAA Tournament berths with a little more than two weeks remaining in the regular season. The top six get in. The Wildcats are currently in fifth.

Cal State East Bay is 18-23 overall and in 10thplace in the CCAA at 15-20, but with nine games remaining on their schedule, the Pioneers could make a run with a strong finish.

A win Tuesday would add to the Wildcats' percentage-points leads over sixth-place Sonoma State and seventh-place Cal Poly Pomona, while drawing them closer to Stanislaus State and San Francisco State, which are still well within striking distance for the Wildcats.

Tuesday's game will be broadcast online at www.chicowildcats.com, where a link to live stats can also be found.

Following Tuesday's game, the Wildcats will return home to prep for a huge four-game series against Sonoma State this weekend at Nettleton Stadium. The series begins Friday with a single game at 6 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader is also a celebration of life for Steve Nettleton, for whom Nettleton Stadium is named. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to join us in celebrating Mr. Nettleton's wonderfully-lived life. The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. and first pitch is at noon. Sunday is Senior Day—the final home game for Chico State's eight seniors. That ceremony gets started at 11:30 a.m. and first pitch is scheduled for noon.
