The Chico State men's soccer senior class, which will be honored prior to Saturday's regular-season finale at University Soccer Stadium, will graduate having never missed the postseason. That fact became official Wednesday afternoon when Cal Poly Pomona beat Sonoma State in overtime, sealing a fourth straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament berth for the Wildcats.
But they are not satisfied. With home matches Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning remaining on their regular-season schedule, the Wildcats know that CCAA Tournament seeding (including a possible first-round home match) and their NCAA Championship Tournament hopes are potentially riding on these next two performances.
Chico State is ranked No. 10 in today's second installment of the NCAA Super Region 4 rankings. Ten teams from Super Region 4 will advance to the NCAA Tournament. The tournament field will be announced Monday, November 18.
The Wildcats have won three in a row and sport an overall record of 10-4-0 and CCAA ledger of 6-4-0. They take on Cal State East Bay ( 2-14-0, 0-10-0) Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and Cal State Monterey Bay (8-5-2, 3-5-2) Sunday at 11:30.
The Wildcats' senior class of Joey Scotti, Matt Hafizi, Samuel Licona, Alex Fluitt, Justin Bethke, Mikey Hirsch, and Ronan McEnroe will be celebrated prior to kickoff Sunday morning. Fluitt, Bethke, Hirsch, and McEnroe have all been part of the program for the last four seasons during which the Wildcats have compiled 41 wins heading into these final two regular-season matches.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Jacob Chong is the reigning CCAA Player of the Week following a three-goal, one-assist performance last Wednesday night at Stanislaus State and the Wildcats' 1-0 home win against Sonoma State on Sunday.
