The 2019 regular season ended on a disappointing note last weekend for the Chico State volleyball team, dropping a pair of road tilts in Southern California. But now it's postseason time, and the Wildcats—the No. 8 seed in this week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament—can wipe the slate clean and begin their quest for not only the conference tourney crown but a berth in next month's NCAA Tournament. To do so, the 'Cats will have to get by a formidable first round opponent, as they go head-to-head with No. 1-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Thursday at Coussoulis Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Chico State, which finished the regular season 13-13 and in fourth place in the CCAA North Division with a 9-9 conference mark, is making its fourth postseason appearance in the last five years. The 'Cats face Cal State San Bernardino (24-0, 17-0 in the CCAA South Division) for the second time in seven days on the Coyotes' home floor. San Bernardino took a three-set decision from the 'Cats last Friday.
 
While the Wildcats look to keep their 2019 season alive, Cal State San Bernardino seeks to extend its tournament title winning streak to four and earn the program's 15th conference crown in the past 19 seasons. The CCAA Tournament champ also receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
 
Historically, the Wildcats haven't had much luck against San Bernardino. Chico State has beaten the Coyotes just once since 1995 in regular season play, but in the CCAA Tournament, the 'Cats have given San Bernardino all it can handle. The two teams met in the finals twice in the last three years—it took five sets for the Coyotes to best the Wildcats in the 2016 CCAA Championships, and in 2017 San Bernardino came back from a set down to beat Chico State in four tightly-played contests.
 
The Chico State-Cal State San Bernardino match caps off a full first day of CCAA Tournament action. The four-match slate gets underway at 12 noon Thursday when No. 3 seed UC San Diego squares off against No. 6 Sonoma State; No. 2 Cal State LA will then take on No. 7 San Francisco State at 2:30 p.m. No. 4 Stanislaus State and No. 5 Cal State San Marcos meet at 5 p.m., giving way to the Wildcats and Coyotes at 7:30 p.m.
