Wildcats set for Senior Day, Toros

Winners of 8 of last 10, Chico State welcomes Dominguez Hills for series

The Chico State baseball team will be honoring its seniors and looking to extend their seasons at the same time this weekend.

The final four-game series at Nettleton Stadium this season starts Friday as the Wildcats host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 6 p.m. in what should be a beautiful night underneath the stadium lights. A doubleheader is at noon on Saturday with the series finale set for 11 a.m. on Sunday with a pregame ceremony at 10:35 a.m. to honor the program's dozen seniors before the first pitch.

All four games will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY with links to video and audio streams, along with live stats, available on the baseball schedule page and in the calendar section on the homepage of the Wildcats Athletics website.

The 12 seniors who will be celebrated on Sunday are Anthony Baleto, Dan Beavers, Kyle Blakeman, Casey Costello, RJ Hassey, Casey Henderson, Brian Pozos, Andrew Schantz, Trevor Steinman, Cameron Santos, Hilario Tovar, and Jae Wagner. Many of them were key contributors to last year's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship, the second straight for the program.

With 10 games left in the regular season, the Wildcats are in position for another postseason run as they have heated up as of late, taking back-to-back series against UC San Diego and Cal State Marcos while winning eight of their last 10 games.

That stretch has Chico State sixth in the latest West Region poll from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

More importantly, that surge puts the Wildcats third in the CCAA at 20-14 and 24-16 overall. Ahead of Chico State are Cal State Monterey Bay (22-10 CCAA) and UC San Diego (20-12) while a handful of teams are close behind with Sonoma State (18-14), Cal State LA (18-14), Cal Poly Pomona (17-15), Cal State East Bay (16-16), and San Francisco State (16-16) making for a bunched pack of contenders.

By taking a third straight series, the Wildcats could create some separation from the group by taking down the Toros this weekend. Cal State Dominguez Hills (9-23 CCAA, 12-26) is in last place in the conference but split a series with Cal State East Bay last week.

After this weekend's series, the Wildcats are at Cal Poly Pomona for a four-game series before completing the regular season with a Friday doubleheader against Stanislaus State on May 4 at Nettleton Stadium as the teams make up contests that were postponed on Feb. 18.
