Hopes high for sunshine and success

Baseball team hosts Cal State San Bernardino this weekend

The clouds parted Thursday afternoon in Chico, allowing the bright blue skies and warm sunshine to make an appreciated appearance.

Like many others who would love to enjoy a sun-splashed spring weekend in Chico, the Chico State and Cal State San Bernardino baseball teams are hoping for more of the same this as they attempt to get in a four-game series at Nettleton Stadium this weekend. Friday's first game, originally scheduled to start at 6 p.m., is now scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Saturday's doubleheader is still slated to start at noon, and Sunday's series finale is expected to begin at 11 a.m.

Chico State, 14-10 overall and 10-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action is hoping to clear out some clouds of its own. The Wildcats have dropped six of eight after a 12-4 start. However, they have actually done a lot of things well during their recent rough stretch. In fact, they've outscored their opponents 45-43. But they've also lost four one-run games in a row.

The Wildcats' biggest struggles have been on defense. They have committed 16 errors leading to 12 runs over the course of those eight games. On the flip side, Chico State's offense has made promising strides, scoring eight or more runs in five of the past nine games.

Cal State San Bernardino, 7-15 overall and 7-9 in the CCAA, is coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of Cal Poly Pomona. The Coyotes have struggled on the mound, posting a league-high team ERA of 7.87.

Chico State, meanwhile, leads the CCAA with a team ERA of 3.19.

The games on Saturday and Sunday will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY. Links to video and audio streams, along with live stats, are available on the top-left corner of this advance, on the baseball schedule page, and in the calendar on the homepage.
