Box Score 2 TURLOCK – The Wildcats had to wait a little longer than they had hoped, but the Chico State baseball team can now rest assured that it will be playing in next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament.
Chico State won the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Stanislaus State to secure its 17
th postseason berth in the last 20 seasons. Hunter Haworth spun a six-hit shutout in a 6-0 win.
Needing just one win or one Sonoma State loss to clinch, the Wildcats dropped the first two games of the series, losing 9-3 Friday night and 3-2 in the first of two on Saturday. Meanwhile, Sonoma State kept right on winning.
So Haworth took matters into his own hands. Buoyed by a 2-0 lead in the first, the sophomore settled in a shut out the Warriors.
Meanwhile, six different Wildcats drove in a run in the win. Andru Cardenas led the team with a trio of hits. Ben Gamba, Dillon Kelley, Cody Snider and Dallas Porter had two apiece.
The Wildcats improved to 31-18 overall and 21-16 in the CCAA.
With one regular season game remaining, Sunday's noon series finale, the Wildcats are still in the hunt for a CCAA North Division crown, needing a win and a Cal State Monterey Bay loss to Cal State East Bay to lay claim to it.
Kelley was the only Wildcat with two hits in the opener.
They tied the game at 1 in the sixth when Cody Bistline was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Porter's sacrifice bunt, and came around to score on a Cameron Santos single.
The Wildcats nearly took the lead in the seventh, but Bistline was thrown out at home plate attempting to score on a Sonny Cortez single.
A leadoff homer in the bottom-half of the inning gave the Warriors the lead and they tacked on an insurance run to make it 3-1. Gamba doubled and later scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 3-2, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get.
