’Cats get rematch with CPP in opening round of NCAAs

West Regional to be played at California Baptist in Riverside

INDIANAPOLIS – The Chico State baseball team is back in a familiar position against a familiar opponent. The Wildcats claimed the program's 16th NCAA Championship Tournament invitation in the past 21 years by winning the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament title Saturday, along with the automatic NCAA Championships bid that comes with it.
 
The Wildcats' opponent and destination were revealed during Sunday night's NCAA Championship Tournament Selection show. Chico State is the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday at 7 p.m. at California Baptist University in Riverside.
 
Chico State and Cal Poly Pomona played in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament Wednesday, a game the Wildcats won 6-2. The teams have played four times this season, with each team winning a pair.
 
No. 2 seed Dixie State will take on No. 5 seed Cal State Monterey Bay to open the West Regional on Thursday at 11 a.m. Top-seeded California Baptist will face No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay at 3 p.m. in the other first-round contest.

Every Chico State postseason game will be broadcast live locally on AM-1290 KPAY, online at www.ChicoWildcats.com, and video-streamed via the CBU Lancers Game Day Portal.

The winner of Chico State's game Thursday will face the Dixie State-Cal State Monterey Bay winner Friday. The loser will face the California Baptist-Cal State East Bay winner.
 
Chico State enters the tournament with a record of 35-20. Cal Poly Pomona is 36-17 and claimed the CCAA's South Division title.

The winner of the six-team, double-elimination tournament will advance to the Division II College World Series May 28-June 4 in Cary, North Carolina. The Wildcats are in search of their 10th West Region title and trip to the College World Series in the last 20 seasons.

The remainder of the tournament schedule is determined by the outcomes of May 20 and beyond, and there are three possible brackets, with three games played Saturday at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and one to two more games Monday at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to the California Baptist
