After playing five-plus games in four days, the Chico State baseball team came home late Tuesday night hoping three days of rest will be enough. Head Coach Dave Taylor and the Wildcats will find out this weekend when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Saturday at noon. They'll play a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
Chico State is 23-9 overall and ranked No. 23 in the nation. At 13-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Wildcats lead Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay by a game in the North Division standings.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is 14-17 overall and 8-12 in the CCAA. But the Toros have been very good against good teams. They took three of four against UC San Diego, beat Cal Poly Pomona in a non-conference game, and won two of three against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Chico State leads the CCAA in a number of offensive categories: average (.335), runs per game (7.8), doubles (61), triples (17), hit-by-pitch (39), on-base percentage (.416) and sacrifice hits (42). The Wildcats rank second in the conference in ERA (3.64) and fourth in fielding percentage (.961).
Cal State Dominguez Hills is third in fielding (.962), sixth in batting (.293), and 10
th in ERA (4.74).
Three Wildcats bring impressive streaks into the series. Sonny Cortez has reached base safely in 27 straight games and hit safely in 16 in a row. He's six shy of Daniel Code's school record 22-game hit streak. Ben Gamba has reached base safely in 19 games in a row and is in the midst of a 14-game hit streak. Cameron Santos has hit safely in 11 straight.
On the mound, starter Clayton Gelfand has thrown 19 and a third scoreless frames and leads the CCAA with a 1.17 ERA.
