Box Score 2 LA JOLLA – Two late pushes came up just short as the Chico State baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at UC San Diego Saturday. The Wildcats lost the opener 10-7 and the nightcap 4-3.
Chico State dipped to 6-7 overall and 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). UC San Diego, which will go for the series sweep Sunday at 11 a.m., improved to 16-7, 12-3 in the CCAA.
The Wildcats trailed 10-3 in the opener before battling back with three runs in the sixth to trim the deficit to 10-6. They added another run in the ninth. But they stranded two in each of those innings, stymying their hopes for a huge comeback.
Peter Miller and Sean Smith had three hits apiece and Danny Miller was 2-for-2. Peter Miller drove in three runs and Danny Miller and Matt Jacobson a pair.
Kurt Laver threw two and two-thirds shutout innings in relief to give the Wildcats a chance to rally.
The Wildcats fell behind 3-0 in the opener but whittled away at the lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. But they couldn't put a crooked number on the board, stranding five runners over the final four frames.
Freshman Hunter Haworth rebounded after a rough first inning to go five frames and Robert Hook pitched a scoreless sixth.
Andrew Carrillo drove in two runs and Danny Miller knocked in the other.
