Box Score 2 ROHNERT PARK – The Capital City Clash will determine the California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball championship.
A sweep by Chico State or Sonoma State on Senior Day Saturday in Rohnert Park would have been enough to clinch the regular-season conference title, but that was not to be. Chico State won the first game 7-3 behind another Nick Baker gem before falling 4-2 in the nightcap, setting up Sunday's showdown for the CCAA title.
A win would give Chico its second conference crown in three years. Sonoma State would share the title with UC San Diego if it wins and the Tritons win their series final Saturday night.
First pitch at Raley Field – home of the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats – is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tickets are $15 and will be available at the stadium beginning at approximately 11:45. That same ticket will also be good for a Sacramento River Cats game this season.
The 6
th-ranked Wildcats, No. 2 in the West Region, are 37-10 overall and 29-9 in the CCAA. Sonoma State is 26-14 overall and 23-8 in the CCAA.
Baker threw eight shutout innings for his league-leading ninth win of the season, scattering five hits, walking one, and striking out four. The senior (9-1) lowered his ERA to 1.56 and put the Wildcats on the doorstop of the conference crown.
Peter Miller and Ryan McClellan drove in two runs apiece and Eric Angerer scored twice for the Wildcats, who pounded out 16 hits. Miller, Connor Huesers, Clayton Gelfand, Blake Walker and Cody Slader had two hits apiece as 11 different Wildcats had at least one.
The Wildcats were in position to win the second game as well, leading 2-1 after three innings. Slader and Ryne Clark reached base leading off the inning to start the rally. Angerer brought in the first run with a ground ball and Ruben Padilla sacrificed Clark home to give starter Brad Lohse the lead.
Lohse allowed the tying run in the fourth however, and settled for a no-decision after giving up two runs in four innings of work. It marked the first time this season the Wildcats did not win a Lohse start.
Sonoma State scored two more runs in the fifth on Justin Serrao's pinch two-run double, saddling reliever Robert Hook (6-1) with his first loss of the season.
Aaron Gillis cooled the Wildcats' offense with three and a third shutout innings in relief to earn the win for Sonoma State.
Clark had three of the Wildcats five hits in the game.
The Wildcats will be in search of their 30
th conference victory Sunday, a number reached by only three teams in school history and none since the 2002 team won a school-record 33. The 1997 and 2000 teams each won 30 conference games.
Marcos Lara (7-3, 2.23 ERA) will be on the mound for the Wildcats. Sonoma State will likely counter with freshman left-hander Matt Hammonds (2-0, 4.60 ERA).
The game will be broadcast locally on AM-1290 KPAY and online
