Wildcats' wild CCAA Tournament run ends

Chico State beats Cal Poly Pomona before falling to UCSD

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STOCKTON – Don't blame the Chico State baseball team for being a bit Misty-eyed after losing to UC San Diego. Not because the Tritons raised the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament banner after their wild 10-7 win Saturday night, but because they were still soaking in the performance of  Alex "Misty" Mistuloff in their 5-2 win against Cal Poly Pomona earlier in the day.

Head Coach Dave Taylor was searching for another strong starter to step forward heading into next week's NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional and may have found him in Mistuloff (3-1). The junior had not started a game in nearly three months but limited the high-powered Pomona offense to two runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings.

Baseball player Ryan McClellan
It was the longest outing of his career and may have earned the junior another start in next week's NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional.

The win netted the Wildcats a crack at UC San Diego Saturday night, needing a win to force a winner-take-all title game on Sunday. They showed the kind of fight it will take to advance through the West Regional and on to the Division II College World Series, but the well-rested Tritons held them off.

Trailing 6-0, the Wildcats rallied for seven runs in the sixth. Eric Angerer led off the inning with a single and later in the inning gave Chico State a 7-6 lead with an RBI single. Dylan Garcia smacked a two-run double, Peter Miller and Ryan McClellan had RBI singles, and Jeffrey Ortega and Ryne Clark logged run-scoring grounders in between. It was the Wildcats' highest-scoring inning since Feb. 10, 2013.

Luke Barker relieved after the first two Tritons reached in the bottom-half of the inning. Troy Cruz's line drive hit Barker in the head and bounded into right field, plating the winning run and bringing Barker to his knees in a very scary moment.

After a long discussion with the athletic trainer and Taylor, Barker took the ball and got back on the hill. He promptly struck out the next hitter. The Wildcats were off the mat again.

They simply couldn't solve UC San Diego ace Justin Donatella, however. The First Team All-CCAA selection was making his first appearance of the tournament. He came on to finish the sixth before the Tritons (35-14) scored the go-ahead run in the seventh and two insurance runs in the eighth to win.

Chico State, ranked No. 9 in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region entering the weekend, is now 39-13. The Wildcats are seemingly a shoe-in for next week's NCAA Championship Tournament West Regional. They'll learn the field and location of the tournament Sunday night at 7 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Game 1: Chico State 5, Cal Poly Pomona 2
Robert Hook threw two and a third innings of scoreless relief and Barker retired the Broncos in order in the ninth for his 14th save. He's now one save shy of Chico State's single-season record.

Madrid hit a two-run homer to give Chico State a 3-1 lead in the second and the pitching staff made it stand. Miller ripped a leadoff triple and McClellan tied the game with an RBI single before Madrid went yard.

Padilla's hit-and-run double down the left field line plated two insurance runs for the Wildcats in the fifth. Cody Slader started the rally with a bunt hit and Angerer singled to left to set things up for Padilla.

Angerer has now reached base in 19 consecutive games while Ryne Clark has hit safely in 10 in a row.

Mistuloff allowed a run on three singles in the first but settled in nicely after that retired 14 of the next 16 hitters he faced.

Miller, McClellan, Padilla and Clark were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
