Buoyed by Angerer, Baker, Wildcats win again

Baker fires fourth complete game of season in 6-1 win

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – The clock may be ticking down on the brilliant four-year careers of Nick Baker and Eric Angerer, but they're making sure they have a heck of a time. Baker logged his fourth complete-game and Angerer hit a two-run tater to lift 8th-ranked Chico State to a 6-1 win at Cal State San Bernardino Thursday.

The Wildcats improved to 31-7 overall and 23-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with their fifth straight win and 19th in their last 21 games. They still trail Sonoma State for the conference lead by percentage points but reduced the magic number to five to clinch a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament with 11 games to go. It would be their 18th postseason appearance in the last 19 years.

Baker blazed through nine innings, needing only 94 pitches. As usual, the Wildcats defense was stellar behind him. He only had one three-ball count and three two-ball counts all day while scattering nine hits. He coaxed three double-play grounders and got an out on the first pitch of an at-bat nine times. He's 7-1 with a 1.67 ERA this season and 29-8 with a 2.86 ERA in 53 collegiate appearances.

Angerer's two-run shot in the second gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead. Ryne Clark drove in two runs as well, while stretching his hitting streak to 12 games. Blake Walker was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Ruben Padilla's eighth-inning single extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Clark walked and scored on Ryan McClellan's base hit in the first. Clark's second-inning sacrifice fly made it 2-0 before Angerer doubled the lead with one swing of the bat.

Baker surrendered a solo home run in the bottom-half of the inning but that was the only runner he allowed to touch third base.

The Wildcats got insurance runs in the seventh and ninth. Connor Huesers was hit by a pitch and scored (after Walker's sacrifice bunt) when an outfielder misplayed Cody Slader's single in the seventh. Clark singled home Walker (who singled and stole second) in the ninth.

The series continues with a doubleheader Friday at 11 a.m. and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.
