Box Score LOS ANGELES – The Chico State pitched staff posted its second straight shutout and sixth of the season to cap a good weekend with a 6-0 win at Cal State L.A. Sunday at Reeder Field. Nick Baker, Alex Mistuloff and Luke Barker combined on a six-hitter for the 15th-ranked Wildcats, who improved to 16-5 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Ruben Padilla went 2-for-4 with a two-run single and Connor Huesers 3-for-4 with three runs scored in his fourth career start.
Baker allowed just four hits and a walk in five innings to improve to 4-1 and lower his season ERA to 1.95. He struck out six to pass Pete Mickartz for third on the Wildcats' career strikeouts list. Mistuloff made his third relief appearance and allowed two hits in two innings. Barker extended his scoreless innings streak to 14-and-two-thirds with two hitless frames.
Padilla's sacrifice bunt put two Wildcats in scoring position in the first after Eric Angerer reached on an error and Ryne Clark was plunked by a pitch. Tyler Madrid plated one run on a grounder to second and Ryan McClellan cashed in the other with a base hit up the middle.
The Wildcats expanded their cushion with three more runs in the second. Huesers led off with a single and Cody Slader and Angerer walked to load the bases. Huesers scored on a wild pitch and Padilla raked a single through the left side to plate two more runs, making it 5-0.
Huesers led off the eighth with his third hit and eventually scored on Angerer's sacrifice fly for the game's final run.
Chico State and Sonoma State are tied for second in the CCAA standings at 8-4, 1.5 games behind Cal Poly Pomona (13-6). UC San Diego is in fourth at 10-6. The Wildcats will wrap up a stretch of 12 road conference games out of their first 16 with four games at Cal State Stanislaus (8-14, 4-11 CCAA) next weekend beginning with a single game Friday under the new lights in Turlock at 6 p.m.
