Box Score 2 The professor brought his "A" game once again. Nick Baker twirled a complete-game three-hitter to lead the Chico State baseball team to a 2-0 win in the first of two games against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at Nettleton Stadium. He couldn't be more pleased about the Wildcats' 5-4 come-from-behind win in the nightcap.
Baker (3-1) struck out four and didn't walk a batter while running his scoreless innings streak to 15.2 innings. The 25th win of his career moved him past Josh Osborn into third on the school's career wins list.
Marcos Lara has been untouchable at times this season as well, winning his first four starts as a Wildcat. But he had his first rough outing in the second game, surrendering four runs on four hits and three walks in two-plus innings Saturday.
The offense he's picked up on a number of occasions this season returned the favor.
The Wildcats scored once in the fifth when Eric Angerer was hit by a pitch for a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) record 49th time in his career, stole second, and scored on Jeffrey Ortega's base knock up the middle.
They trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with two more runs in the sixth. Danny Miller got his second pinch-hit RBI single before Cody Slader push-bunted Peter Miller home.
Chico State tied the game in the seventh on Ryan McClellan's safety squeeze. Peter Miller bunted the next pitch up the first-base line to score Ronnie Galosic with the go-ahead run.
Chico State relievers Robert Hook, Alex Mistuloff and Luke Barker combined on 6.2 innings of scoreless relief. Mistuloff (2-1) collected the win and Barker retired the last five hitters for his third save of the season.
The 19th-ranked Wildcats improved to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay, the defending CCAA Champion, fell to 5-12 overall and 2-8 in the CCAA.
The series concludes with a doubleheader Sunday at 11 a.m.
