Wildcats absorb first two CCAA losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEASIDE – Every team has its share of bad days. The 3rd-ranked Chico State baseball team had a double-bad one on Saturday. The Wildcats got blown out 14-2 and then shut out 3-0 in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Wildcats dropped to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Cal State Monterey Bay moved to 15-7 overall and 10-5 in the CCAA.

Chico State Game One starter Ryan O’Shea had an uncharacteristically poor start and the Wildcats never led all day. O’Shea allowed eight runs (seven earned) in three and two-thirds innings, falling to 1-2. Relievers Luke Barker and Steven Swift were knocked around a bit as well before Sean Martin pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Wildcats gave up three in the first, five in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth. They didn’t score until Roger Boulden and Cody Webber drove in runs with RBI-grounders in the ninth.

Jon Peters, Ryne Clark and Blake Gibbs collected the only three hits for the Wildcats.

Game Two was more of a pitchers’ dual won by Jeff Owen (5-0) of Cal State Monterey Bay. He allwed four hits during a complete-game shutout.

Chico State’s Troy Neiman (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits in five frames while striking out five. Morgan Yee pitched a 1-2-3 final frame.

The Otters scored two runs in the third and another in the fifth.

The Wildcats had a chance to strike first in the third by Jake Bailey was thrown out trying to score from second on Eric Angerer’s base hit. Bailey flew out with the bases loaded to end the fourth.

Chico State’s last prime opportunity came in the sixth when the first two runners of the inning reached. But Blake Gibbs, Jon Peters and Cody Webber all struck out, each representing the tying run.

Pierson Jeremiah finished with two hits for the Wildcats.

The four-game series concludes Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m.
