Wildcats improve to 5-0 in CCAA

Box Score SEASIDE – Nick Baker concocted eight more doughnuts and Blake Gibbs hit a two-run homer as the third-ranked Chico State baseball team opened its four-game series in Seaside with a 6-0 victory against Cal State Monterey Bay.

Baker spun eight shutout innings, striking out nine, to improve to 3-0. He’s now thrown 21 consecutive scoreless innings. The junior right hander allowed five hits and walked one while improving to 17-3 as a Wildcat, tying Phil Derryman for eighth on the school’s career wins list. He also registered his 100th career strikeout when designated hitter David Garcia went down swinging to end the fourth.

Sean Martin pitched the ninth for the Wildcats, who improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Every other team in the conference has three or more losses.

Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the CCAA.

The Wildcats manufactured a run in the first when leadoff man Eric Angerer was hit by a pitch, moved to second when Jeremiah drew a walk, to third on Austin Prott’s sacrifice, and scored on Gibbs’ grounder.

That was the game’s lone run until the sixth when Prott led off with a walk and Gibbs followed with a blast over the left-field wall to make it 3-0.

Baker worked around a pair of hits in the eighth before the Wildcats blew it open with three in the ninth.

Ryne Clark led off with a single, and after Angerer walked, Jeremiah doubled to right to plate both runners. Ronnie Galosic traded places with him to make it 6-0.

The series continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11.
