3rd-ranked ’Cats finally getting back into the CCAA fray

Begin a four-game series at Cal State Monterey Bay Friday

The Chico State baseball team has seen California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams beating up on each other throughout the early season – via live stats. The 3rd-ranked Wildcats (11-1, 4-0 CCAA) have played only four conference games as opposed to the 12 many of the teams have played.

Cal State Monterey Bay, which Chico State will play in a four-game series beginning Friday in Seaside, is one of those teams. The Otters, 13-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play, boast the third highest winning percentage in what has proved to be a rough and tumble CCAA thus far. Cal State L.A., at 9-3, has the second best winning percentage behind Chico State.

The good news for the Wildcats is that their conference-opening four-game sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson is looking more and more impressive. The Toros are 7-2 since and are now in fourth place in the CCAA at 7-6.

Every other team is at .500 or below.

The Wildcats won their first nine games of the season, sweeping Academy of Art and Cal State Dominguez Hills before winning three of four against Northwest Nazarene. They’ve risen all the way up to No. 3 in the national rankings.

But this series starts a stretch in which they’ll play 16 of their next 24 on the road. They’ll finish the regular season with 12 straight at home.

The Wildcats are 23-5 all time against the Otters, including 10-2 in Seaside, since they joined the CCAA in 2006. But Cal State Monterey Bay won two games of last season’s series before settling for a split.

The series starts with a single game Friday at 2 p.m., continues with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m., and concludes with a single game Sunday at 11.

All four games will be broadcast locally on FM 101.7 and AM 1340 FOX Sports Radio and streamed online at www.chicowildcats.com.
