Box Score SEASIDE - Chico State Baseball Coach Dave Taylor turned to one of the most effective closers in Chico State history to save the Wildcats series at Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday. Mike Botelho earned a win in his first start for the Wildcats and Sean Martin pitched three unblemished innings to get the save in Chico State's 12-7 win.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 3 in the nation entering the weekend, salvaged a four-game series split with the win.
Botelho went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He struck out six.
The Wildcats gave him plenty of runs to work with, scoring one in the first, six in the second, and four more in the third.
Chico State relievers Kagen Hopkins and Jeremy Perez struggled through a four-run sixth to give the Otters some hope. But Martin slammed the door. The senior did not allow a hit or walk in three innings in his third scoreless appearance of the wekend.
Pierson Jeremiah led the Wildcats with three hits, scored two runs, and drove in two more. Myles Dempsey banged out a pair of hits and was one of seven Wildcats to drive in at least one run. The Wildcats also stole five bases.
Chico State is back in action next weekend when the Wildcats travel to Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay in a four-game series.
