The new ’Cat is in town!

Athletics Department unveils fresh new look

Today marks a historic moment for the Chico State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The new ’Cat in town was introduced to the public at a press conference Thursday morning in the lobby of Acker Gym. Director of Athletics Anita Barker, her staff, and a number of student athletes helped present the department’s fresh and exciting new logo, created in partnership with Jim Ward Design.

“This new athletics mark is the culmination of a long process that reflects the spirit and tradition of Chico State Athletics,” said Barker. “This is the realization of a goal we established nearly seven years ago, and we all believe it is well worth the time and energy we put into it.”

University Creative Director Alan Rellaford was also instrumental in completing the library of athletic marks, which features 14 distinct designs that provide a more contemporary and three-dimensional feel. Each look is characterized by the University’s traditional cardinal and white color scheme and includes accents in gray and black.

The primary logo is a simple but striking Wildcat head that captures a spirit of strength and determination. The library also includes seven secondary marks and five word marks. Three of the marks are sport specific.

“This is a very exciting day for Chico State Athletics,” said Barker. “I firmly believe this is a critical step in honoring our tradition of athletic success and establishing and defining what we have become – one of the premier athletic departments in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and NCAA Division II.”

This new look will brand Chico State Athletics exclusively through a partnership with Strategic Marketing Affiliates (SMA), which has secured trademarks and licensing for the logos. The new logos replace the iconic Wildcat mark that was introduced to campus in the 1990s. However, the traditional mark remains part of the University’s portfolio.

The athletic department will begin using the new logo immediately in digital form and on publications, and it will ultimately replace the current Wildcat on all Chico State athletics gear.

Apparel is currently available at the Chico State Wildcat store on the Chico State campus.

“We look forward to these marks being well received by students, alumni, friends and fans,” said Barker. “We believe that this new logo identity system will be long-lasting and continue to foster pride in our excellent programs.”
